Running deduplication manually on existing data

You can manually scan and eliminate duplicate blocks on an existing FlexVol volume with the sis start command.

About this task

If a deduplication operation is already active on the volume when you run the sis start command (for example, if a scheduled deduplication operation has started), the command fails.

You can run the sis start command when you want to start the deduplication operation manually, such as when the system is idle, or when you want to test the impact of deduplication on a particular operation.

Step

  1. Depending on your requirement, enter the appropriate command:
    If you want to... Then enter the command...
    Start the deduplication operation manually sis start path_name
    Start the deduplication operation manually and scan the existing data sis start -s path_name
    path_name is the complete path to the FlexVol volume.

    Example

    The following command starts the deduplication operation manually on the volume VolA:

    sis start /vol/VolA

    The following command starts the deduplication operation manually and scans the existing data on the volume VolA:

    sis start -s /vol/VolA
