Reducing root volume size to prevent warning messages

By default, each node's root volume is created using 95% of the available root aggregate space. Management software, including OnCommand System Manager, reports a warning when an aggregate is 95% full. To avoid these unnecessary warnings, you can reduce the size of the root volume.

About this task

Reducing the size of the root volume is not a problem because the node's root volume (vol0) typically has more space than needed.

This procedure must be completed using the Data ONTAP CLI.

Steps

  1. Verify the size of the root volumes by using the volume show command.

    Example

    cluster1::> volume show -vserver * -volume vol0 
    -fields percent-used, size
    vserver     volume size    percent-used

    cluster1-02 vol0   352.6GB 8%

  2. Verify the size of the root aggregates by using the storage aggregate show command.

    Example

    innovate::> storage aggregate show -aggregate aggr0*

  3. Compute the new root volume size as 90% of the root aggregate.

    Example

    For example, if the aggregate size is 371.9 GB, the volume should be reduced to 334 GB. (371.9 * 0.9 = 334.7)

  4. Change the root volume size for each node to the new value by using the run -node vol size command.

    Example

    cluster1::> run -node cluster1-01 vol size vol0 334g
    vol size: Flexible volume 'vol0' size set to 334g.
    

  5. Verify that the root aggregates are now 90% full by using the storage aggregate show command.
