SnapVault and MultiStore

If you are using MultiStore software, you can use SnapVault to replicate the data for a vFiler unit.

The management of SnapVault secondary volume (creation or modification of SnapVault relationships and schedules at the SnapVault secondary) is supported from the default vFiler unit (vfiler0) and the nondefault vFiler unit.

The default vFiler unit manages the secondary volume of the default vFiler units and the nondefault vFiler units. The nondefault vFiler unit manages the secondary volume only of the nondefault vFiler units.

You can create relationships in the default vFiler unit and the nondefault vFiler unit. However, you cannot create the same relationship or schedule the same target in more than one vFiler units. When you create a relationship in the default vFiler unit, a configuration entry is created in the registry of the default vFiler unit. You must either delete the relationship or run the snapvault start –r –S srcfiler:source_qtree_path destination_qtree_path command to move the relationship from the default vFiler unit to the nondefault vFiler unit. Also, at any instance, only one target can be active in a volume.
Note: It is best to create and manage all the relationships of the volume in either the default vFiler unit or the nondefault vFiler unit.

The following table shows vFiler unit support with SnapVault secondary volumes for different combinations:

Management of SnapVault secondary volume Ownership of SnapVault secondary volume
Default vFiler unit (vfiler0) Nondefault vFiler unit
Default vFiler unit (vfiler0) Yes Yes
Nondefault vFiler unit No Yes

By default, the default vFiler unit manages the secondary volume of the nondefault vFiler units.

The management of SnapVault primary in a vfiler context is supported.

The following table shows vFiler unit support with SnapVault primary volumes for different combinations:

Management of SnapVault primary volume Ownership of SnapVault primary volume
Default vFiler unit (vFiler0) Nondefault vFiler unit
Default vFiler unit (vFiler0) Yes Yes
Nondefault vFiler unit No Yes

For more information about vFiler units, see the Data ONTAP MultiStore Management Guide for 7-Mode.

DataFabric Manager support for the management of SnapVault relationships

DataFabric Manager supports the management of SnapVault relationships for volumes through the default vFiler (vFiler0) context only. When using DataFabric Manager, the following limitations apply for SnapVault relationships that involve nondefault vFiler units.
  • You can only view SnapVault relationships configured through the default vFiler unit (vfiler0). You cannot view any SnapVault relationships configured through nondefault vFiler units.
  • You can configure new SnapVault relationships for a volume only through the default vFiler unit (vfiler0), even if the volume belongs to a nondefault vFiler unit.
