Supported stretch MetroCluster configuration with disks and array LUNs

When configuring a MetroCluster configuration with both disks and array LUNs, you need to follow the best practice recommendations for how to connect the hardware components.

Connections when using FibreBridge 6500N bridges

When using FibreBridge 6500N bridges in a stretch MetroCluster configuration with disks and storage arrays, the key points to remember about the connections are as follows:

  • The Data ONTAP system connects directly to the FibreBridge 6500N bridges, but connects to the storage array through switches.
  • Connecting the Data ONTAP system to the FibreBridge 6500N bridges through switches is not supported.
  • Different FC initiator ports on the Data ONTAP system must be used for the switch ports connecting to the FibreBridge 6500N bridges than the FC initiator ports for connecting to the storage array.

    If your Data ONTAP system does not have enough FC initiator ports for separate connections to the bridges and storage array, you must add some FC initiator ports.

The following block diagram shows the connectivity when FibreBridge 6500N bridges and disk shelves are added to the stretch MetroCluster configuration from the previous illustration. The connections for accessing array LUNs are purposely grayed out to make it easier for you to see the connections for the FibreBridge bridges:

As the illustration shows, the stretch MetroCluster uses direct FC connections between the Data ONTAP systems and the FibreBridge 6500N bridges. Eight FC initiator ports are required on each Data ONTAP system, four for the FibreBridge 6500N bridges and four for the connections to the storage array via the switches.

Connections when using SAS optical cables

There are no unique requirements when connecting SAS optical cables in a MetroCluster configuration that uses both SAS disk shelves and LUNs on storage arrays. Note: SAS optical cables can be used to cable SAS disk shelves in a stretch MetroCluster system to achieve greater connectivity over distance than is possible with FibreBridge 6500N bridges. SAS optical cables can be used in a new system installation or in an existing system in which you want to replace the SAS copper cables and FibreBridge 6500N bridges. SAS optical cables are supported for use with Data ONTAP systems starting in Data ONTAP 8.2.1.
